The Politeama Garibaldi, begun in 1867 by Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda and inaugurated in 1874, even if incomplete and without a roof, was conceived to function as a "Community Theater": in 1874, the main room, in the shape of a horse shoe, had a capacity of 5000 spectators, two rows of boxes and a gallery divided on two levels. The entrance is characterized by a neoclassical triumphal arch crowned by a two wheeled wagon drawn by four horses with a bronze Apollo, a work of Marco Rutelli. The term "Politeama" signifies a theater in which various types of productions are featured. Today it is the prestigious home of the Sicilian Symphonic Orchestra.
